Care Guide / Carpet

How Often Should You Professionally Clean Your Carpet?

There is no single cleaning interval that fits every room or household. A quiet guest bedroom and a family-room walkway do not collect soil at the same rate. Use traffic, visible condition and the carpet maker’s requirements to build a practical routine.

Keep This in Mind

A general 6–18 month interval is a starting point; your carpet and household determine the timing.

Start with the manufacturer

Check the care information that came with the carpet. It may specify a cleaning method, maintenance interval or records to retain. Keep appointment details and invoices together so your maintenance history is easy to find.

If you cannot identify the carpet, tell the cleaner. Fiber and construction still need to be assessed rather than assuming every installed carpet has the same requirements.

Adjust for how the room is used

OCD HOME’s current guidance is generally every 6–18 months, depending on conditions. Pets, children, frequent guests and direct entry from outdoors can justify more frequent assessment. A lightly used room may need less frequent professional attention than the route through it.

The aim is to respond before soil becomes heavily embedded, not to wait for every room to look equally dirty.

Watch the main paths

Look near doorways, beside the sofa and on stairs. Compare those areas with less-used carpet in the same room, allowing for different light and pile direction. Darker lanes, persistent spots or a change in feel are useful reasons to seek an assessment.

A visible difference is not proof of removable dirt. Wear and fading can remain after cleaning, so ask what improvement is likely.

Keep up the in-between care

Vacuum regularly with settings appropriate to the carpet, paying extra attention to busy paths. Keep entrance mats clean and remove loose grit before it travels farther into the home. Blot fresh spills promptly and follow the carpet maker’s spot-care guidance.

Routine care supports a professional clean; it does not replace the need to assess soil that is no longer responding to normal maintenance.

Review the schedule after a visit

Ask the technician what was observed and which rooms may need attention sooner. Note the date, treatments and any remaining permanent marks so they are not mistaken for a new problem later.

Revisit the plan when household use changes—a new pet, a home office or more frequent entertaining can change where soil collects. A schedule should follow the home you live in now.
